Rules for Buying Your First Firearm for Home Defense and Range Time

  1. Your gun needs to look like a gun.
No bright or “cute” colors (pink, purple, Tiffany blue, etc.). Stick to practical, professional colors: black, gunmetal gray, olive green, flat dark earth, or tan.

  2. 5 or fewer major parts (field-strip level).
Frame, recoil spring, barrel, slide, and magazine. You should never need to disassemble the gun beyond basic field stripping for cleaning.

  3. Striker-fired only (no external hammers).
Consistent trigger pull every single time.

  4. Largest frame that still fits your hand comfortably.
Go compact or full-size. Bigger guns are easier to shoot well, especially under stress or during longer range sessions.

  5. Single-stack or double-stack (your choice).
Double-stack gives you higher capacity but a thicker grip. Single-stack is slimmer and easier for smaller hands but holds fewer rounds.

  6. Price range: $400 – $700.
If it’s well under $400 or well over $700, you should understand why (used gun, includes optic, special edition, etc.).

  7. Stick to proven major manufacturers.
Top reliable brands: Ruger, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Glock, Beretta, Remington, Heckler & Koch (H&K), Benelli, and Walther.

  8. Zero or one external safety only.
External safeties are mechanical devices that can fail or be forgotten under stress. Prefer guns with a grip safety, a simple thumb safety, or no external safety at all.

  9. Where to buy in the Northern Virginia area

  10. Get quality training regularly.
Professional instruction is the most important part of responsible ownership. Visit Live Fire Instruction (Northern Virginia’s premier firearms training company, right here in NOVA) – https://livefireinstruction.com/
