Rules to purchase your first gun for home defense

Thinking about buying your first gun?

Purchasing a firearm for home defense is a significant decision that comes with great responsibility. Whether you are in Virginia, Maryland, or Washington D.C., understanding the rules and best practices is crucial for your safety and legal compliance.

Before you visit a gun store, ensure you meet the legal criteria:

  • Age: You must be at least 21 years old to purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer. For rifles/shotguns, the minimum age is generally 18, though some state laws may vary.
  • Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident.
  • Background Check: Every purchase from a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder requires a background check through the NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System).
  • Identification: Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID (like a driver's license) that shows your current address.

2. Choose the Right Tool for the Job

Not all guns are equal for home defense. Consider:

  • Handguns: Offer maneuverability and ease of storage but require more training to master.
  • Shotguns: Provide significant stopping power and are generally easier to aim under stress, but have more recoil and are longer.
  • Rifles (Pistol Caliber Carbines): Can offer a good balance of low recoil and high capacity.

3. Get Professional Training

A gun is only as effective as the person behind it. We strongly recommend:

  • Basic Safety Course: Learn how to handle, store, and clean your firearm safely.
  • Live Fire Practice: Spend time at the range with a certified instructor to build muscle memory and accuracy.
  • Concealed Carry Permit (CCW): Even if you don't plan to carry daily, a CCW course provides valuable legal knowledge about the use of force.

4. Storage and Safety

If you have a gun for home defense, you must store it safely but accessibly:

  • Quick-Access Safes: Biometric or electronic keypad safes allow you to reach your firearm in seconds while keeping it away from children or unauthorized users.
  • Education: Ensure everyone in your household understands the "4 Rules of Gun Safety."

5. The "Cooling Off" Period- Virginia Specifics

In Virginia, there is no state-mandated waiting period, but you can only purchase one handgun every 30 days unless you hold a valid Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) or meet other specific exceptions.
